Since 2016, the Bavarian Film Center and its partners have organized the i4c – an international conference about virtual reality and 360° film. This year’s conference carried the title The Magic in Virtual Reality and took place from the 28th to the 29th of June at the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts. The event was supported by the Creative Europe Desk Munich and the Bavarian government under the umbrella of “Immersive.Bavaria”. The conference’s program was very diverse, including keynote lectures given by filmmakers, visual artists, curators, museum experts as well as tech companies. Among the keynote lectures was the Swiss director Dani Levy speaking about his new 360° film “Geschichten aus Jerusalem” as well as the artists Bianca Kennedy and Felix Krauss talking about working with virtual reality as an artistic medium. Besides the lectures and discussions, the event was accompanied by an exhibition of artistic VR experiences curated by Tina Sauerländer and Astrid Kahmke. The exhibition presented the VR-installation “HanaHana” by artist Mélodie Mousset, the current VR-experience “Land of Cloud” by Tamiko Thiel, the VR work “VR All in this together” by Bianca Kennedy, and the VR-experience “Here we are – a Turing Torture” by the Swan Collective. Besides the VR-installations, an AR-installation by the artist duo Banz & Bowinkel was also on display.
Additionally, the Munich VR-artist Tamiko Thiel did a performance using the virtual-reality painting program Tilt Brush and also gave the visitors the opportunity to try out the program and to create their own virtual reality worlds.
